Publicó su primer libro, titulado \u003ci\u003eLa tierra más ajena\u003c\/i\u003e, en 1955. Le siguieron  \u003ci\u003eLa última inocencia\u003c\/i\u003e, en 1956, y \u003ci\u003eLas aventuras perdidas\u003c\/i\u003e, en 1958. Entre 1960 y 1964 se instaló en París y allí colaboró en distintas  revistas y diarios. De esa época procede su amistad con Julio Cortázar,  Rosa Chacel y Octavio Paz, quien prologó su cuarto poemario, titulado \u003ci\u003eÁrbol de Diana\u003c\/i\u003e (1962). En 1964 regresó a Buenos Aires y publicó  sus obras más conocidas: \u003ci\u003eLos trabajos y las noches\u003c\/i\u003e (1965), \u003ci\u003eExtracción de la piedra de locura\u003c\/i\u003e (1968) y \u003ci\u003eEl infierno musical\u003c\/i\u003e (1971).
