Essays explore the connections between art, anatomy, psychology, philosophy, evolutionary theory, and modern medical science.

Leading scholars reveal Klimt's engagement with the ideas reshaping his era, in particular microscopical cell examination, Darwinian concepts of human evolution, and the discovery of the unconscious.
