Bird examines a small group of early papyrus manuscripts of Homer’s \u003ci\u003eIliad\u003c\/i\u003e, known as the Ptolemaic papyri, which, although fragmentary, are the oldest surviving physical evidence of the text of the \u003ci\u003eIliad\u003c\/i\u003e, dating from the third to the first centuries BCE.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese papyri have been described as “eccentric” or even “wild” by some scholars.
