Su libro de memorias, A Cup of Water Under My Bed obtuvo el Premio a Escritores Emergentes Dr. Betty Berzon y fue finalista del Premio Publishing Triangle. Hernández coeditó la antología feminista Colonize This! y es profesora asociada de escritura creativa en la Universidad Northwestern.
