All previously unpublished 1970s musician photos by Ginny Winn of Grateful Dead, Gram Parsons, Captain Beefheart, Joni Mitchell, Alice Coltrane, Van Morrison, Maria Muldaur, Incredible String Band, Emmylou Harris, Alice Cooper, Frank Zappa, Bonnie Raitt, Tim Buckley, Bob Marley, and Al Green.
Early 1970s, Ginny Winn was staff photographer for Warner/Reprise Records when its roster included John Cale, Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, Maria Muldaur, Jimmy Webb, Incredible String Band, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, Captain Beefheart, Alice Cooper, Frank Zappa, Bonnie Raitt, Tim Buckley, Arlo Guthrie, Jackie DeShannon. Led by Mo Ostin & Joe Smith, the label’s catalog was a blend of counterculture icons and Americana.
By the late 70s, Ginny moved into Hollywood imagery, capturing Carly Simon, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Roz Kelly, Penelope Spheeris, Jodie Foster, Gloria Swanson. Ginny also photographed Bob Marley, Al Green, Maxayn Lewis, Donna Summer, and Alice Coltrane. All photos are previously unpublished.
About the Author
Pat Thomas is the author of Listen, Whitey! The Sights & Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975, Did It! Jerry Rubin: An American Revolutionary, and co-editor of Invitation to Openness: The Jazz & Soul Photography of Les McCann 1960-1980. In co-operation with the Estate of Allen Ginsberg, Thomas edited the visual tome Material Wealth: The Personal Archives of Allen Ginsberg, with a forward by poet Anne Waldman, which won a PEN award in 2024. Thomas was the co-editor of Ernie in Kovacsland: Drawings, and Photographs from Television's Original Genius and Grievous Angels, Trout Masks, and American Beauties: 1970s Rock & Roll Photography of Ginny Winn with an introduction by Maria Muldaur. He lives on America’s left coast.
Jessica Hundley is writer and editor of many publications including; Grievous Angel: An Intimate Biography of Gram Parsons, Dennis Hopper.
