With its emphasis on refinement, emotional understanding, and the art of connection, it remains a guide not only to sensuality but to harmony and fulfillment in every aspect of life.

About the Author

Vatsyayana Mallanaga was an Indian philosopher and scholar believed to have lived between the 2nd and 4th centuries CE. Best known for composing The Kama Sutra, he explored the intersections of love, ethics, and daily living, offering insights into human relationships that continue to resonate today. His work stands as a cornerstone of ancient Indian thought—uniting sensual awareness with spiritual and intellectual depth.

About the Translator

Shivaram Parashuram Bhide and Bhagavanlal Indrajit were Indian Sanskrit scholars associated with the early English translation of The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana. Their knowledge of Sanskrit language, classical Indian thought and textual tradition formed an important foundation for the translation. Working in a period when Indian texts were being introduced to English-speaking readers, they helped make one of ancient India’s most discussed works available beyond its original scholarly and cultural setting.

Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821–1890) was a British explorer, linguist, writer and translator, widely known for his adventurous travels and deep interest in Eastern literature and culture. Associated with the celebrated 1883 English edition of The Kama Sutra, Burton helped bring the text to a Victorian readership, presenting it not merely as an erotic manual but as a significant work of Indian social, literary and philosophical history.
